Project Description

Improving food security in Africa through increased system productivity of biomass-based value

Bonn / Hohenheim, 2013 to 2018

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Project management Jülich)

Website: http://www.biomassweb.org/

Project objective

The BiomassWeb research initiative specifically aims at increasing availability and access to food in Sub-Saharan Africa by focusing on synergies and competition between producing, processing, and distributing more high value biomass for food and non-food products. Development-oriented research will seek to overcome constraints through efficient and effective value webs based on agronomic, technological and institutional innovations in primary production, marketing and processing. The objective is to facilitate adaptation of Africa’s bioeconomy to participate in emerging global markets and profit from global demands, while enhancing food security and improving rural livelihoods from biomass production.

Specific tasks of the work package

Identifying specific biomass products that could be

  • provided by the African countries Ghana, Nigeria and Ethiopia
  • Markets for potential plant-based feedstocks
  • Identification of buyers of plant resources
  • Solutions for practical implementation

Project Description

Dresden / Braunschweig, 2012 bis 2013

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (Project management FNR)

The project was established in different phases:

First phase: Preliminary phase, October 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013, completed
Second phase: is currently in development with a new concept

Project objective

The goal of the project “Development and Establishment of raw material partnerships for sustainable supply of renewable raw materials for German enterprises” is to guarantee a continuous supply of high quality fibres from fibre containing plants for German companies. The partnerships of enterprises and producers (farmer) of the renewable raw material shall have benefits for both sides. The raw material producing countries benefit from additional income and accelerated regional development while the German companies become independent from the commodity exchange and benefit from stable prices.

Tasks

  • Assessment of market demand of fibre-based plant raw materials,
  • Quantity and quality of natural resources; Evaluation of land availability, GIS - based risk assessment;
  • Development of quality standards
  • Access to fibres from fibre nettle (contract farming), from the pseudostem of banana and from rosette leaves of pineapple (residues from pineapple plantations),
  • Human capital,
  • Assessment and decision making system,
  • Functional specification for the feasibility study

Project

Dresden/ Tieringen, 2012 to 2014

Client: Mattes & Ammann GmbH & Co. KG

Project objective

Establishment of agricultural production and industrial processing of fibre nettle with the goal of enabling spinning of the fibers into yarn; this yarn is intended to be suitable for use in textiles and to eventually replace cotton in the long term.

Tasks

  • Cultivation of fibre nettle in a test field,
  • Testing of existing fibre decortication and processing technologies

Project

Ghana, since 2010

Self-financed project

Project objective

Development of construction material for rural housing with regional available plant material as aggregates; Primarily using available residues e.g. from palm oil production; the project also aims at developing jobs in agriculture as well as in the manufacturing industry.

Tasks

Test series in order to determine the suitability of different plants (plant parts and plant fibres) for the use in cement based construction elements.

Project

Moritzburg, 2008/2009

Client: PSM gGmbH

Project objective

Ensuring a cost-effective and secure energy supply with biomass from forest residues

Tasks

Assessment of status quo and preparation of a concept to reach particular targets for the sections renewable resources, technology and economy

Training for employees

Project

Zschadraß/ Tanndorf, 2007
Collaborative project with Bildungs- und Sozialwerk Muldental e.V.

Project objectives

Development of methods to increase the storage life of Miscanthus x giganteus rhizomes and the improvement of plantlet survival after planting

Tasks

Preparation of specification documents for the project task

Planning of the implementation

Project

Slatina pod Hazmburk

Slatina, 2009 to 2010

Client: municipality Slatina, cooperation partner: University Prague, technology park Chomutov

Funded by: Interreg III A

Project objective

The municipality Slatina has the target to supply all local companies self-sufficiently with heat from a biogas plant or a biomass power plant (based on the CHP concept). At the same time 0.5 MW electrical power is intended to be fed into the grid. In order to ensure the supply of 0.5 MW, both plants need an installed capacity of 1.5 MW (0.5 MW electricity, 1 MW heat). According to the state of today’s technology a plant for power generation above 0.6 MW is divided into modules. These modules ensure sufficient capacity during the base and the peak load separately.

Tasks

Preparation of a concept to provide renewable resources:

Estimation of quantity and quality of existing raw and residual materials,

Identification of applications

In case of insufficient biomass quantities: planning for additional cultivation of crops,

Ensuring transferability of the evaluation systems to other municipalities

Project

Since 2006

Project objective and tasks

Many municipalities want to change some of their energy supply to renewable energy and renewable plant resources with the goal to reduce CO2 emissions and save costs. The project analyses the initial state of the municipality, calculates the energy requirements and plans the energy supply with respect to the efficiency and profitability of the required investments.

Project

Olbersdorf, 2003 bis 2006

Client: HPC BOTEC

Project objective
